Joan of Arc was known as ‘The Maid of Orléans.' She was born in 1412, at the time France was embroiled the Hundred Years’ War with England. She led the French army to victory over the English at Orléans and was a national heroine aged only 18. She was captured a year later and Joan was burned at the stake as a heretic by the English and their French collaborators, she was canonised as a saint, 500 years later.
